Santolina Has Gray Stems In Middle Of Plant

Question From: B. Martin - McHenry, Illinois, United States
Q: My santolina has gray stems growing in the Middle of the plant.. they are dry and I take them off the roots seem to be fine is it too much water or not enough

A: Probably too much water. Santolina grows best in lean fast draining soil. I cut mine back hard in spring when I saw new growth emerging. Fertilizing also causes leggy growth. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
