Will Red Salvia Thrive indoors During Winter

Question From: J. Watson - Williamsfield, Illinois, United States
Q: Hi Nancy, Maybe you would help me decide - I wanted to bring our red Salvias in for the winter, will they thrive inside our home this winter? We reside in zone 5b (per the USDA map). Thanks so much.

A:
Judy, Your lovely salvias are perennials, so you can bring them indoors and overwinter them, but they will not thrive. Lack of light is the
big culprit. To keep them flowering you will need to invest in heavy duty lights which can be very expensive to buy and run. If red is your color
consider poinsettias. They will be available soon. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
