Vertical InclinationCompared to a traditional pruner, the PX downward inclination compensates the wrist bending and allows the hand to remain n a neutral position, which reduces the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. |
Lateral InclinationCompared to traditional pruner, the PX inclination to the left (for right handed pruners) compensates the wrist bending and allows the hand to remain in a neutral position, which improves pressure capacity to be applied on handles and avoids M.S.D. (Musculo Skeletal Disorders). |
Ergonomic FeaturesVertical and lateral inclinations. Shape of the handles. Elastomer coating on upper handles. Choice of the cutting head. Choice of spring. Hand measuring system. |
Ergonomic BenefitsKeeps your wrist in a neutral position. Provides comfort. Helps to spread pressure evenly. Provides the right cutting head for each job. Adapts the pruner to the power of your hand. Guides you to find the best pruner for you. |

Our well-used and well-liked old pair of pruning shears, which had been in service for at least 30 or 35 years, plum wore out this summer, and we discovered that the line has been discontinued, so we could not replace our old pair with an identical pair. We engaged in very extensive and intensive research before deciding on the two models of pruning shears that we would give the intense hands-on trial, a "snip-off," to determine what brand and model of pruners we would be using for the next 30 years.
We found that one brand, Felco: for instance, the Felco F-6 Classic Pruner For Smaller Hands , which is made in Switzerland, is the consensus Gold Standard of pruners. Felco pruners have earned an enviable reputation and have transcended mere considerations of utility to attain the status of a fashion icon: serious gardeners' almost knee-jerk answer to the question of what are the "best" pruners usually will be "Felco" stated in the manner of "mais naturellement." If your primary purpose is to make your gardening neighbor green with envy, the surest path is to be seen with a pair of Felcos. Certainly, we knew that we could not go wrong jerking our knees along with the crowd and going along with Felcos. Felcos are appropriately expensive.
But further research revealed that, among serious gardeners who actually have used both a pair of Felco secateurs* and a pair of Bahco secateurs extensively in their gardens, a substantial proportion ended up preferring the Bahcos. (*"Secateurs" is the term that much of the world -- even the English-speaking world -- uses to refer to hand pruning shears. It is especially appropriate to apply the term to Bahco secateurs, which are made in a northern suburb of Paris, France.) Bahcos, too, are expensive, but model for model generally are priced lower -- not much lower -- than their Felco counterparts. (As of this writing, it happens that the Felco F-6 model that is directly apposite to the Bahco PX-S2 is being offered on Amazon for a discount of $10.05 from its list price but the Bahco PX-S2 is listed on Amazon at full retail price, which results in the Felco's Amazon price being one nickel lower in price than Amazon's price for the Bahco PX-S2.)
Although they are made in France, the Bahco secateurs are made with Swedish steel, and have some subtle curves in their form that fully justify the "Ergonomic" moniker. For instance, unlike even the comparable Felco model, the Bahco PX-S2 will not lay flat on a table top, because the angle of the cutting blades (viewed from above the spine of the blades) curves slightly inward from the angle of the handles, saving the user just a few degrees of wrist turn; that translates to less fatigue at the end of the day. So it was that the secateurs that we gave the opportunity to defend the top of the pruner hill were the Bahco PX-S2 secateurs, not a Felco model.
To make sure that were were not choosing a new pair of pruners for celebrity value only, and not for function, we decided to test the Bahco PX-S2 pruners against a much less expensive challenger: Corona Clipper 1-inch Capacity Bypass Pruner With Vinyl Coated Steel Ergonomic Rolling Handle BP 4840 for which, also, we have posted a review here on Amazon. Because the Bahco pruners are model for model much more expensive than the respective Corona Clipper pruners, we chose for trial evaluation the premium rotating handle version of the Corona Clipper in order to make to make the competition a fairer fight.
Fortunately, Amazon listed both the Bahco and Corona Clipper pruner models, so we ordered both of the pruners that we thought we might like from Amazon -- knowing that Amazon would accept the disfavored pair as a return if we returned the item in unused condition. Amazon delivered both pruners to us on time, and we had both in our home for hands-on use for a good week before we had to return one pair.
Only one of the two of us has "smaller" hands, and the Bahco PX-S2 that we ordered is the model specifically for smaller hands (the standard size model is the PX-M2), but the Bahco PX-S2 was comfortable in the larger hands of the larger-handed of us; symmetrically, the standard size Corona Clipper BP 4840 was comfortable in the smaller hands of the smaller-handed of us.
We knew that we could not return the pair that was not favored in a "used" condition, so we just flexed the mechanisms and simulated use indoors. But we flexed and simulated a LOT. Even without cutting real branches, we learned valuable lessons about comfort and ergonomics, and we are confidant that we were able to make a fair and good evaluation, from hundreds of simulated cuttings with each, of how our hands would feel using each of the candidates over the long term.
The Corona Clipper BP 4840 pruners were very good indeed. As much as we have liked, and were accustomed to using, our three decades old pruners, by keeping the BP 4840s, we would have upgraded significantly.
But, compared to the Corona Clipper pruners, the Bahco secateurs were simply better in all respects. The hand feel and the silky smoothness of operation of the Bahco PX-S2 must be experienced in person to appreciate fully. The shape and operation of secondary controls, such as the shock absorbing bumper that dampens the last millimeter of travel as the blades appproach fully closed position, and the lock that keeps the blades closed when not in use, were just "right."
We returned the Corona Clipper pruners and kept the Bahco secateurs. After two weeks of using the Bahco secateurs outside in the garden, we are more confident than ever that we made the correct decision. The Bahco secateurs were more than double the price of the Corona Clipper pruners, but in the last analysis, it was an easy (and in the end proven to be right) decision to choose the Bahco PX-S2 over the Corona BP 4840.
It's now April 2017, and I want to amend my review: I've changed my thoughts about these pruners. I've been using them for close to 3 years and I am happy. The locking mechanism loosened up over time. The biggest plus for me is that my hand doesn't tire because of the ergonomic design. I bought a 2nd pair and equally happy with it. And the locking mechanism worked fine from the start.
They’ve been boxed for return and replacement. A over-deep leather holster would have been essential. Pockets would have been shredded.
Hopefully the replacement will have better quality control.
My Sandvik pruners have been performing well for over 20 years. This new generation (from the same company) is not of the same caliber.
But I’ll update when the new model arrives.
