I deploy to Afghanistan often, and I've spent the last three summers here. I miss JULY 4th so freaking much... That aside, this time around, I was intent on growing some flowers to break up the monotony and ugliness of white rock, dust, cement t-wall barriers and barbed wire. Kind of hard to do when there's no dirt around.
I'm an enlisted flyer (USAF) and fly missions every day, but I found time to build a little two-tiered planter when a couple of spring thunderstorms gave me some downtime. (Thanks next door NAVY SEABEES for the scrap wood you threw out in my squadron's dumpster). Being the industrious airman that I am, I made friends with a bunch of random people and borrowed a circular saw, some screws, a tape measure, etc...and built my masterpiece. (4ft x 8in).
Thankfully, my dirt had arrived in the mail right on time. I bought four bags, and mixed about half with some Afghan dirt (think really, really sandy, rocky, clay) and planted my seeds. I only bought this type because it was the most dirt I could get for the least amount of $. But, holy crap am I glad I bought this dirt. I'm growing sunflowers and zinnias (both like direct sunlight and there is way too much of that out here) and boy are they growing. The plants sprouted in 6days. 6! And little buds have just started blooming around day 30. I'm not sure what they put in the dirt, but thanks! I'll be looking for this brand in stores next spring when I PCS to the Midwest when I get back in the fall. If I can't find it in stores, I'll be buying online again.
Takeaway: this dirt is magic. I had low hopes that my plants would grow, much less bloom and they have done both!

Takeaway: this dirt is magic. I had low hopes that my plants would grow, much less bloom and they have done both!
There was an issue with a lot of bugs coming from the soil even though I put the bag in the freezer for probably weeks before using it (as recommended by another reviewer). I called the company and they said that happens with organic soil and to buy the little sticky traps you can stick in the soil. I did that and those sticky traps got all the bugs within a few days. It was an easy solution. Definitely still worth getting this soil imo.
First, the quality is terrific. I mixed it with vermiculite and perlite to lighten it, and then gave all my plants a new lease on life. I didn't notice any bugs, just nice, fluffy soil. Big mistake. I should have tested one or two first for bugs. Within a couple of days, dozens of huge flies appeared and buzzed around the plant lights, but they didn't last long, thank goodness. The worst things were the tiny insects, probably gnats, that have infested all the plants since. I bought pot stickers, to the tune of $40 for 4 packages, yellow butterflies--pretty when empty, not so pretty when full of little bugs. The bugs don't seem to affect the quality of the plants; they are just unsightly and a little gross. I have about 75 plants, mostly flowering, all flourishing, so I can't afford to throw them all out and start over.
But how could I be absolutely sure that the tiny insects stemmed from the Black Gold potting soil? I discovered the answer after tightly closing the bag and storing it away for a couple of months following the initial use. When I opened the bag, it was teeming with little bugs. Disgusted, I threw it out onto the deck where the temperature was around 15 degrees. This led to a solution to the bug conundrum.
When I brought the bag back inside, the bugs were a lot more quiet. Eureka! I guess I will be spending my spare time this winter scooping out plants, at least the ones that are easily scoopable, and putting the pots full of dirt out of the deck so the bugs can freeze, then repotting the plants in the bugless dirt once it warms up again. I can only hope that not too many bugs will adhere to the roots of the plants before I repot them.
In the future, since the dirt IS organic and IS the best quality I have bought, I will buy more. It's preferable to Miracle Gro and other inferior potting soils I have tried. BUT I will freeze it before using it to kill off any livestock that may be lurking within before opening the bag. I've learned my lesson. ...Maybe the Black Gold company should do this before selling it to unsuspecting customers.
UPDATE 4 JULY 2016: I tried the garlic powder recommended by a reader, which seemed to work for a short period of time-- but the gnats returned. Disappointing!
I also waited for the little crawlies to return after reading another reader's comments that freezing would kill bugs BUT NOT EGGS. However, most happily, RETURN THEY DID NOT! I have not seen any live gnats in the bags of potting mix I froze and mixed with organic vermiculite and perlite, then sealed up and waited for future planting work. NO BUGS AT ALL!
So, I will stick to the freezing method, at least until a better idea comes along. Thanks to everyone for all your comments, and happy gardening to all!
UPDATE 4 OCTOBER 2016: After a whole year of hard work, watching, and waiting, my plants (the survivors) are finally bug-free! The solution seems to be just to freeze the potting soil for a couple of days when it arrives to kill any insects inside the bag before they can infest your plants. I have just replaced my six Christmas cacti and a few other casualties, including a six-foot avocado tree, so it's been a real learning experience! Best of luck!
UPDATE 29 MAY 2020: I just want to clarify that I have bought the organic version of this potting soil regularly for several years now, and I have not had any more bug problems since the first times I bought it. I did freeze it many times, but then after a while, since I didn't have any buggy plants, I took a chance and stopped. I always mix the potting soil with vermiculite and perlite, and I have beautiful plants. Maybe the company did something to fix the problem. If so, I thank them, and I increased my rating to 4 stars.
