Starlings more than make up for their drab looks and bad manners with their contribution to pest insect control. They are one of the few birds that can be depended on to eat Japanese beetles--both adult beetles and immature larva called white grubs. When you see a flock of starlings grazing on a lawn, you can be sure that there are lots of white grubs just under the turf, preparing to emerge as beetles soon. They also prey on:
