Repel Gophers by Smell -
Like moles, gophers have a keen sense of smell. Just about anything you can think of has been suggested as a potential gopher stinker-outer. Ammonia; bits of barbed wire or broken glass; bleach; cigarette butts and ashes; cotton balls soaked in olive oil; creosote; dog or chicken manure; drain cleaner; garlic; hair from humans, dogs or cats; lye; mothballs; red pepper; rotten fish heads; synthetic weasel urine; and tar have all been tried against gophers and moles.
The problem is that you must find the active tunnel for the repellent to work, and it usually must be changed or renewed every week or so, or the gopher becomes accustomed to the repellent. The odds of success are usually low, because a gopher will simply wall off a stinky tunnel and dig elsewhere.
Finally, if you are going to experiment, be aware that bleach, ammonia, and drain cleaners are extremely toxic and must never be mixed together. They will immediately react to form a poisonous gas that can cause severe coughing, choking, eye, throat, and lung damage, and possibly death. Yours, that is.

Repel Gophers by Taste –
What about the famous “gopher purge” or “mole plant”? Like many members of the Euphorbia group, this upright shrubby plant (Euphorbia lathyrus) has a milky, toxic sap, and it is supposed to be harmful to gophers when they nibble or bruise the roots. However, there is little hard evidence that these plants work as advertised. The gophers would simply tunnel around or beneath them. Aside from this, the sap is a strong skin irritant—not for gophers, but for humans!
