Riding Mower Options

Rear Engine Riding Mowers

Rear engine riders are ideal for homeowners who just want to cut grass for the most part. Homeowners who have lots that are one-quarter acre or larger with trees, flower beds, a vegetable garden or hedge will find a rear engine rider a good choice due to its tight turning radius and ability to move around obstacles. Most rear engine riders are 9 to 13.5 hp with a 30 inch deck or less and have mulching capabilities. The engine is located in the rear of these mowers and their transmissions are manual. Engaging the gear-driven mower is similar to driving a car with a clutch. Rear engine riders are limited in attachment choices and most can only utilize a bagger, small p8ll car or lawn sweeper; which for many folks is fine. These mowers usually do not support snow removal equipment such as a blade. The cost of these mowers ranges from $900 to $1200.

Lawn Mowing Tractors

Lawn tractors are anchored by 13.5 to 25 horsepower engines with 38 inch to 46 inch mulching mower decks. These tractors have a large mowing deck to cut faster and reduce mowing time. They accommodate a variety of attachments, including rollers, coring aerators, spreaders, sprayers, dethatchers, baggers and yard carts. Some versions also can use snow removal equipment such as plows or snow-throwers. The tractor’s engine is usually a five or six speed manual transmission or a n automatic (hydrostatic), which operates just like a car’s automatic transmission. Prices will range from $850 to $2000.

Garden Tractors

Often known as suburban farm tractors, garden tractors range from 20 to 26 horsepower with deck sizes from 46 inches to 50 inches. Garden tractors are not for afenced-in yards because their decks will never get past the standard 36 ich gate. These heavy duty machines are perfect for lots with two or more acres to mow. Some of the more ppopular attachments for garden tractors indlude cultivators and disc harrows for seed bed preparation; furrow openers for carving wide soil openings to plant potatoes or corn; a landscaping rear grader and leveler blade for leveling yards, driveways and parking areas; ower tillers for cultivating; chipper/shredder vacs for yard cleanup and snow removal equipment. Prices will range from $2,200 to $3,600.
