Shrubs For Wildlife

Songbirds and other small animals need shrubs and trees for protection from predators such as cats, owls, and hawks. Plant shrubs and trees in clumps, hedgerows or thickets. They will offer more cover than plants that stand alone. Shrubs such as the following are good providers of shelter and food:
Blackberries (Rubus species)
Canada hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)
Crab apple (Malus species)
Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
Hawthorn (Crataegus species)
Highbush cranberry (Viburnum trilobum)
Juniper (Juniperus species)
Raspberries (Rubus species)
Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis)
Sumac (Rhus species)
Viburnums (Viburnum species)
White pine (Pinus strobus)
Yews (Taxus species)
