Alternative Solutions For Protecting Leafy Vegetables From Leaf Miners And Egg Laying Flies

Question From: Gasquet, California, United States
Q: I am just a little backyard veg. gardener - fighting the leafminers and egg laying fly on leafy vegetables - past years cannot even grow swiss chard, beets etc. because of these problems. I see the spray Azamax on the website, but very expensive - any other product that will help that won't be so costly??

A: Covering the surface of the soil with black plastic will keep them from emerging out of the soil. Covering the plants with a floating row cover will keep the flying adults from laying eggs. Good Luck, Nancy and Happy Yardening
