Q: I recently noticed a small branch of my arborvitae that was turning brown. When I looked, there was a large round node encasing the branch and "choking" it. I opened the node and it is solid, woody material. I found a smaller one growing another branch, so I removed them both. I took pics, and can send them if needed. I cannot find anything that resembles this on the net. Thank you.
A: Sounds like a gall to me. I would get the advice of a certified arborist in your area. A trained tree doctor will give you an accurate diagnosis and advice on the proper way to treat it. Best and Happy Yardening, Nancy.
