Arborvitae Branches Have Round Bulges That Swell And Split Open

Question From: K. Nguyen - Federal Way, Washington, United States
Q: Hi we have planted some arborvitae before the summer and we noticed there are round bulges all over the branches. These bulges slowly swell and then split open. We've tried spray it with fungus treatment and the leaves foliage that were brownish are slowly turning green again but the round bulges does not seem to go away. Is there anything else we can try?

I suspect your arbs have scale, an insect not a fungal disease. Cut a few samples and take them to an independent garden center or nursery for a more accurate ID. They recommend a product, probably a systemic that will take care of the problem. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
