Arborvitae Have Vertical Splits In Trunks Near Ground

Question From: P. Romaldini - Vestal, New York, United States
Q: I have several Green Giant arborvitaes with vertical splits in their trunks near the ground. What causes this, and is there any way to repair it? Thanks.

There is nothing to be done but let nature take its course. The splits are probably caused by winter damage. Be sure to keep them mulched and watered. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
