Arborvitae Tree Bark Has Been Stripped

Question From: Port Huron, Michigan, United States
Q: We have a row of large arborvitae that is very tall and over 40 years old. This winter most all of the trees look like the bark has been stripped. Is this disease or an animal. What should we do?

A: There is nothing you can do. Could be caused by animals, could be caused by weather - or a combination of the two. Keep your arbs watered and mulch them with 3 inches of organic material. If they were mine I would have a certified arborist do an onsite inspection to see what really up. Not the time for long distance guesses. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
