Balloon Flowers Start To Open Then Shrivel Up

Question From: V. Nagle - West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States
Q: Balloon flower had from last year came up with many balloons and started to open up, then all of a sudden the balloons started to shrivel up. I cut them back and the first part still has flowers but no more seem to be coming. This an older plant. I have three new ones planted this year and they seem OK.

A: It could be the result of crazy weather patterns we have experiences this spring. Keep an eye out for crown rot. A bit of fish and kelp fertilizer, such as Neptune's Harvest might help. I'd use it at half strength once. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
