Birch Tree Produces Heavy Sap Run After Being Damaged In Ice Storm

Question From: L. Addis - Gainesville, Georgia, United States
Q: The ice storm caused limbs to break on our Birch trees. After cutting off tops of broken limbs, water keeps dripping out where the limbs were cut. It's like you left a faucet on slow drip. This has been going on for about two weeks now. Is this normal or what is wrong with the tree?

Believe it or not it is normal, considering what happened to the tree. Birches, like maples produce a heavy sap run when the temps warm in spring. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
