Black Beetles Inside Bark Of Clematis Montanis

Question From: NEW YORK
Q: An old clematis montanis has died back, almost gone, but now showing spring blooms. I accidentally cut a stem. Inside the bark of the main trunks and stems, I see clusters of black beetles, about 3/8 of an inch long. I've sprinkled some systemic granules around the roots.
