Can A Spirea Be Planted Where There Was A Spirea With Fire Blight Removed

Question From: N. Ehrke - Fraser, Michigan, United States
Q: I had a spirea with fire blight which was recently removed. I want to plant another spirea in the same location. Will that be a problem because of the fire blight?

Fire blight is not a soil borne disease. That said there may be roots of the infected plants behind, so I would at least wait till next spring to re-plant. The bacteria of fireblight fungus is spread by insects and infected tools. Disinfect all tools, including shovels - I prefer to use rubbing alcohol. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
