Can Bur Oak Nut Husks Be Used For Mulch

Question From: B. Fleger - Nashville, Tennessee, United States
Q: The Bur Oak. Are the husks of the Bur Oak nut usable? I container garden and have a lot of the Bur Oak trees in my area. I'm wondering if they break down well in composting and if they add anything special to the composting. Also, I place wood chips on top of my containers if I added Bur Oak husks would it add anything beneficial to my plants (tomatoes, peppers and beans) that they would consume. Thanks.

Google using burr oak husks for compost or mulch and you'll get the straight skinny. They can be used, but may involve a bit of work and success depends upon your mulch mix. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
