Can Grass Fertilizer Be Used On A Perennial Garden

Question From: Capac, Michigan, United States
Q: Is it OK to use grass fertilizer on the perennial garden? I have a lot of area to cover and was thinking about expense.

I don't recommend it. Grass fertilizer is high in nitrogen which perennials don't need a lot of. Cheap fast release grass fertilizer is also high in salts, that can damage the plants. Most perennials don't need a lot of fertilizer once they are established. Top dressing with compost and shredded leaves used as mulch will do the job and they are free. Happy Yardening, Nancy
