Cascading Carnations And Geraniums

Question From: J. Owen - Utica, Michigan, United States
Q: Looking for cascading carnations. About 45 years ago, I visited the Saratoga horse track in Saratoga Springs, NY. The front of the grandstands were covered with what I believe were red and white cascading carnations. The flowers were not petunias. Recent looks on google come up with seeds for clove carnations (cascading) of mixed soft colors. I have called some of the areas bigger flower places, but have not found any cascading carnations. Any thoughts besides growing from seed? Thank you.

To my knowledge cascading carnations are not available. I think what you saw may have been a type of geramium that does cascade. They are very popular in Switzerland and called Balcon type. You may have to buy them online. Google Balcon-type geraniums for sources. I did google Saratoga racetrack and the flowers planted this year are petunias. You can also call the racetrack for more information. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
