Question From: S. Ariail - VIRGINIA
Q: The cowbirds have taken over my feeder. Totally driven off my beloved Cardinals(our state bird) and our wonderful finches, and titermouses. What can I do to drive them away and bring back our song birds? Please help. Have a bluebird box next to our bedroom window. Have enjoyed seeing him and her “nest it”, defend it and generally claim it as their own. Were anxious about the babies. Woke up this morning to find the bottom portion of the box had been seemingly pried open and a look inside revealed an empty nest with parts of the nest scattered below. Heart broken. Mom and Dad returned as if nothing had happened....both entered the box. What do you think happened. we are heart broken. Thank you very much. Sherry Ariail
A: My guess is raccoons were able break into your blue bird box. A latch to lock the clean out door will keep them out. Using bird feeders, such as tube feeders will help and purchasing seed that cowbirds will not eat will keep them out of your feeders. Google "how to keep cowbirds out of bird feeders" for recommendations. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
