Crepe Myrtle Has Black Like Soot On Branches And Spots On Leaves

Question From: C. Sorenson - White Plains, Maryland, United States
Q: My crepe myrtle has black like soot on it's branches and spots of it on the leaves. What could cause this and what should I do?I live in Charles County Maryland

Sounds like tar spot to me. It's a fungus that looks awful, but will not hurt the tree. Weather conditions are a big factor. Take a deep breath and relax. The leaves will soon be gone. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
