Crepe Myrtles Are Drying Out

Question From: McKinney, Texas, United States
Q: My Crape Myrtles have droopy flower buds and end stems. The whole plant looks like it is drying out. Some of the end leaves are curling up and dying. What can I do?

A:
Water them. Plants are 90 percent water. They must have it to live. If they don't get enough they wilt and die. Sounds like that's what your crepes are doing. How much? There is no hard and fast rule. Depends on their exposures, their sizes, the soil they grow in, the temperatures etc. You should have a certified arborist do an onsite inspection and give you an accurate assessment on the conditions of the shrubs, what they need as far as water is concerned and other care and how best to provide it.
