Cucumbers Are Like Tennis Balls And Starting To Turn Yellow

Question From: Livonia, Michigan, United States
Q: my sisters cucs are like tennis balls and are starting to turn yellow. what could be wrong is there something missing in the soil or is it a virus?

A: Could be a combination of things. Too much fertilizer, especially one high in nitrogen. Poor pollination will cause deformed fruit. High heat will also also cause deformed fruit. And then there is moisture. Cukes do best when grown in soil that stays moist. That's tough to do when the temperatures soar and there is no rain. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
