Cutting Lambs Ear Back Severely To Remove Rotting Undergrowth

Question From: SOUTH CAROLINA
Q: I can't keep up with the accumulation of rotting leaves under Lambs' Ear each year. Can I prune the whole area to ground level....and will it come back alright? If yes, when is best time? I'm in South Carolina. Thank you!

A: You can cut them back any time the leaves get funky. I cut them back to a few inches in height. You might consider replacing the specie with Big Ears, "Helen Von Stein'. It holds up better in hot muggy weather.. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
