Daffodil Stems Are Withering And Rotting Away At Base Of Flowers

Question From: R. Hedge - Butler, Ohio, United States
Q: I have a small patch of daffodils and about half of them are rotting off at the base of the flower stem right as they are about to bloom. The leaves and bulbs appear to be fine, but the flowers stems are withering and rotting away, right about where the leaves separate. What causes this, and how can I treat it?

A: Your bulbs have a fungal disease and there is no control. Best to plant fresh bulbs next fall in another location as the spores may remain in the the soil for several years. Be sure to buy healthy bulbs. Here's a link to the daffodil society for more information.
