Daylily Crowns Have Yellow Brown Leaves At Base

Question From: Owatonna, Minnesota, United States
Q: /why so all my daylily crowns develop yellow/brown leaves at their bases? It has happened every year no matter the spring conditions and does not seem to be any type of disease but certainly is not very aestheic. i remove them to hopefully decrease stress on the roots just like one should do with dead tree limbs. Is there something I should be doing differently to prevent their occurrence or is this just what daylilies do? you may publish the question but without my initials

A: Your daylilies may have a virus. Thrips are another possibility. Take samples to an independent garden center or nursery that sell these plants for an accurate ID and control. Sadly there is no control for a virus and the plants should be removed. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
