Daylily Flowers Are Being Cleanly Cut Just When Starting To Form

Question From: A. Wilson - NEW HAMPSHIRE
Q: Something is causing my daylily flower stems to be broken off cleanly like a knife has cut almost all the way through. And always about the same distance down from the flower head ~ about 5 to 6 inches. The flowers are just starting to form. There are no signs of bugs and it is not all the stems on each plant. There is no sign that the leaves are being chewed.

A: My guess is your day lilies are being eaten by deer. Use Plantskydd repellant spray to deter them. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy

Comment: I actually found the problem on an obscure web site. My lilies were victims of Scape Burst. It identified the problem exactly and also made me aware that there is nothing I can really do about it. Now that our wet spring is over, I have not had the same problem again. Deer? Oh yes. Nip the buds right off at the top.
