Delphinium Leaves Turned Black And Disintegrated But There Are New Green Shoots

Question From: R. Summersides - Idaho Falls, Idaho, United States
Q: My 6 yr old delphinium started growing (very wet Spring) then the stems and the Leaves turned black and disintegrated. I was going to dig up the plant but I see new green shoots.I would like your advice. Thank you

A: I am impressed your delphinium lived six years. They are short lived perennials with an average life span of 2 to 3 years here in Michigan. I doubt it will return to its original vigor, so I would dig it out. But if you wish to give it a go, clean away all the diseased plant material and keep it well watered.
