Do Rose Bushes Need Pruning And When Should It Be Done

Question From: Commerce Township, Michigan, United States
Q: I have several "Knock-out rose" bushes that are 3 years old. Some are 3-4 feet tall. I have never trimmed them except when I prune off the dead blooms. Should I cut them back in the Fall or Spring? If so, how much? They were about a foot high when first planted. I love them and don't want to do something that will ruin them. Help.... Thank you.

Pruning doesn't ruin roses. In spring, when the forsythia bloom is the best time to prune them. But they don't require it. You can just remove any dead for damaged wood and do a little shaping. Happy Yardening, Nancy
