Does Using Newspapers As Mulch Introduce Harmful Chemicals To Garden

Question From: D. Woods - Walworth, Wisconsin, United States
Q: I just read your article in this month's Wisconsin Gardener. How do you feel about using newspapers a vegetable garden. I don't use sprays, etc and I am concerned about introducing harmful substances into our food supply. On the other hand my raised beds are overwhelmed with quack grass every spring, and I now realize I may just be stimulating its growth put spending hours yanking it out every spring (with some white roots being a foot long or more!)

A: The late Jeff Ball and I both used newspaper as mulch in our garden beds. I spread 1/4 inch of compost over the soil, 4 to six sheets of newspaper and top it off with shredded leaves. Most newspapers use soy ink which is non-toxic. You will save yourself a lot of time and effort Denise and your plants will require less water. Happy Yardening, Nancy
