Dogwood Flowers Are Smaller Brownish And Shriveled This Year

Question From: MARYLAND
Q: My cultured dogwoods have had beautiful flowers for 24 years. They had never been fertilized. Last Fall a landscaping company put an acidic fertilizer on them. This Spring the flowers are smaller, brownish colored, and shrivelled. We have had a lot of rain. Trees get sun most of the day. What should I do?

A: It may not have been the fertilizer, but excessive rain and cold. Those tender buds are easily damaged by a late season frost. Just do what you have been doing and make sure they are watered when the heat arrives. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
