Dwarf Andromeda Not Flowering

Question From: D. Twardy - OREGON
Q: I have 2 dwarf andromade's. They are atleast 15yrs. old. They usually flower beautifully but this spring only one flowered. What would cause the bush not to set or bloom? They have never been pruned. Just watered as needed in Summer and not ferterlized at all. I've never had a problem with them until this year. Are they just getting old?

A:

Sounds like the weather. These shrubs bloom on year old wood, so drought, sudden drop in temperatures - an early or late freeze can damage tender buds, resulting in loss of bloom. Hope this helps, Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.

Q: Thank you for getting back to me...yes we had a late hard frost and the buds are there just dried up and brown and brittle...should those be cut off so new buds can set for next year?

A:

The pruning is your choice. If Mother Nature cooperates they will bloom either way. Best Nancy
