Emerald Arborvitae Is Turning Brown And Has Split Trunk

Question From: Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
Q: Charlotte nc , we had a lot of rain. I have 3 emerald arborvitae trees lined up next to my home 4 ft apart. Now 1 of trucks is turning brown it has a split trunk. I cleaned the brown leaves off of it. What can I do to save it.

A: The splitting of the trunk probably is a result frost damage which could have begun three years ago. There is nothing to be done about it but allow nature to take its course. Water the arb well twice a week if it does not rain an inch of water. Mulching around the tree with 3 inches of quality mulch will help hold moisture in the soil. Keep it 4 inches from the trunk of the tree. In late fall fertilize it with Espoma Plant Tone according to package directions. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
