Evergreen Clematis Has Started Dripping Sap

Question From: B. Spagnolo - Eugene, Oregon, United States
Q: we have a very mature evergreen clematis in our backyard that has started dripping a lot of sap. The vines cover a 10' x 12' patio and there is sap covering the whole area. What could be causing this?

A: Look closely to see if the vine tips are not covered in tiny aphids. You may need a magnifying glass. They drip a kind of honey dew. Since they are overhead I recommend you use an organic OMRI listed spray such as AZAMAX. It's non-toxic. Plan to respray once for a month or so. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
