Fern Plant Has Been Flattened

Question From: L. Stein - Warminster, Pennsylvania, United States
Q: We have 2 ferns next to a small tree in our back yard. The area is totally in shade. Until recently both ferns seemed to be ok then one day about a week or so ago one of the ferns went flat as though something sat on it, The fronds seem to be ok. I thought the tree was taking the water so I gave it more water but it is still flat. Could I be giving it too much water? What are your thoughts? Thanks

Once the ferns have been flattened they will probably not stand up again without support, regardless of how much water you give them. You may have been visited by a small deer. They nap in beds of ferns. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
