Ferns Seem Healthy But Grow Only Two Inches Tall

Question From: M. Scillieri - NEW JERSEY
Q: Hi Nancy .. I live in NJ and have enjoyed a bed of ferns in my front yard. Recently, every clump has resulted in a dwarfed or miniature version of the fern. They never grow to full size. They actually about 2inches tall. They appear healthy but stunted in growth. Any ideas?

A: My guess is they may have been contaminated by a pesticide of some sort. This often happens when chemicals have been sprayed on lawns, trees and shrubs. On a windy day drift is an issue. Keep them well watered. See how they do next spring. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
