Fir Tree Has Lots Of Tiny Cotton Like Substance On Needles

Question From: M. Ketchum - Didsbury, Alberta, Canada
Q: I have a fir tree that I just noticed a mass of tiny cottony balls or strips attached to the needles. I've only been able to find references to cottony egg sacs on the bark, and wondered if this is the same or different bug, and how best to help the tree. I live between Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Thanks for your time and help!

Cottony scale or pine needle scale is probably the culprit. Take samples and photos to your local independent garden center for an accurate Id and recommendations on what to use to combat it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
