For How Long Should Tree Roots Be Protected With Mulch

Question From: MICHIGAN
Q: How long g should you protect the roots of a new tree.....have red maples planted this past late summer to fall 2018....covered the roots with mulch at first and then for the winter covered with grass clippings...how long should we keep the mulch around the base of the tree?

A: Professionals recommend keeping 3-inches of mulch around the tree throughout its life. The mulch layer should be no more than 3 inches deep, should not touch the bark of the tree and should be spread out to the drip. Best Nancy and Happy Gardening
