Fuzzy White Long Haired Growths In Soil Near Impatiens

Question From: K. Hayes - Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, United States
Q: we have several fuzzy white growths which look like extra long haired caterpillars in the soil in our urn of impatiens. I've tried a fungicide, but they come right back.

My guess is your plants have an insect known as mealy bug. You can spray it with one part alcohol to three parts water to which you have added a couple drops of liquid dish soap. Neem oil is also effective. Scraping off the fuzz will make the sprays more effective. Follow the directions on the neem oil bottle. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
