Ginko Tree Bark Is Deteriorating And Top Of Central Leader Died

Question From: Fairfield, Iowa, United States
Q: I have a ginko tree that was planted 10 years ago as a 2" caliper. Two years ago parts of the trunk bark expanded, developed pits and holes, darkened and became macerated. It got worse last year and more of the same this year. The top 5' of the central leader died this year and I cut it off. Some of the branches have this same affliction, however, the follage looks great. The damage looks like woodpecker work. We have a lot of them but do not see them on the tree. Help.

Dave, You nee the advice of a certified arborist, a tree doctor. Call and make an appointment for an onsite inspection.Good Luck, Nancy and Happy Yardening.
