Q: Girard's Scarlet that has been in my garden with other azaleas that do extremely well but the Girard looks half dead every spring but blooms beautifully on the other half. Should I prune it again or just pitch it? Near Lake Erie, Ohio, where the Girard stuff was grown.
A: Sounds like your plant is suffering winter burn. Try protecting it with a burlap screen. If it fails to help I'd look for a replacement. Best and Happy Yarding, Nancy.
