Grass Under Crepe Myrtle Trees Looks Like Oil Has Been Spilled On It

Question From: S. Cordell - Germantown, Tennessee, United States
Q: On the grass underneath three of my Crepe Myrtles it looks like oil has been spilled. Is this some type of disease?

A: It's probably black sooty mold that develops on the honey dew from aphids. If they were mine I would have a professional on-site inspection. To find a certified arborist in your areal go to www.tica.org and type in your zip code. Best Nancy
