Grass Will Not Grow In Shady Yard

Question From: Valhalla, New York, United States
Q: We live in the lower Hudson Valley and our back yard is mostly woods with just a small patch of grass separating the north facing back of the house and the woods. In the summer that patch of grass gets direct sunlight for 4-6 hours a day and shade in the morning and afternoons. The section of grass closest to the back of the house gets no direct sunlight because it is always shaded by the house. We have never been able to grow grass in that small section of yard. The completely shaded area is mostly moss. What type of grass do you recommend? I've included a photo it that helps?

A: I don't recommend you try to grow grass in that area. It will never thrive because of lack of sun. A ground cover is your best bet. Or just let mother nature do her thing and go with the moss. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
