Green Berries Are Falling From Holly Tree

Question From: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, United States
Q: The green berries on my holly trees are falling now. Last year there were plenty of green berries, but by the time Christmas came, they were all gone. What causes this, and how can I prevent this from happening in the future? Thank you!

My best guess is abnormally high heat and lack of moisture. While you can't do much about the weather, try providing some shade for the shrub in the heat of the afternoon and make sure the soil stays moist. A three inch layer of organic mulch and a deep soak if it does not rain will be helpful. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
