Hibiscus Leaves Are Suddenly Dying Off And There Are Red Scaly Spots On Main Stem And Side Branches

Question From: Lansdale, Pennsylvania, United States
Q: My hibiscus has been indoors all winter. All of a sudden the leaves are dying off and I noticed many tiny red scaly spots on the main stem and side branches? Is this a fungus or a bug?

A: What you have is scale. It is a bug that produces a protective coating and it is hard to get rid of. Many gardeners use a q tip soaked in alcohol and rub them off. Others just throw out the plants. Get yourself a 10 power magnifying glass and use it to check your plants on a regular basis. If you catch the infestation early you have a fighting chance to beat it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
