How Much Mulch Around Base Of Tree And Will English Ivy Choke Unwanted Plants And Trees

Question From: MICHIGAN
Q: how much mulch should be applied around the base of a tree so as not to destroy its life? Does english ivy deter the growth of unwanted existing bushes or trees. In other words, if there is a tree or bush I don't want in the yard, will a planting of english ivy around the base eventually choke the growth?

Mulch should be applied to a depth of 3 to 4 inches but six inches from the trunk of a tree and say 4 inches from shrubs. English Ivy will not "choke the growth" of trees in Michigan at this time. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
