How Much Pruning Is Safe For Boxwood And Burning Bush

Question From: M. Whitworth - Dryden, Michigan, United States
Q: Can I severly prune back 20 yrs old burning bush & boxwoods? Also, can anything be done about the tent caterpillars that eat the burning bushes up every June?

A: You should only remove 1/4 of the boxwood foliage in a season. The burning bush can be cut back hard, but there is always a risk, so 1/3 rd reduction per season is safe. March would be the best time. Don't even think about it now. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
