Q: I am looking for a beautiful shade tree for my backyard. The planting site will be about 15 ft from the foundation and deck support structure. I am inclined to plant a Katsura tree as it has many of the qualities I am looking for. Should I have long range concern with this tree’s root growth causing any damage to foundation or deck structure?
A: Katsuras are shallow rooted trees. I would give it 20 to thirty feet. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
