Q: Hi Nancy I have been digging up my canna and elephant blubs and not sure what is the right way to store them for next year. I placed them in paper grocery store bags. I put them in the basement in a old coal room, so they would be kept cold for the winter. Is that the right way to store them? Last year I left them in the ground, only a few came back, this time I decided I would dig them up. I would appreciate if you could tell me the best way to store them. I love your column, I read it every Friday.
A: Shelly, My friend stores hers in paper bags filled with shredded paper and overwinters them in their unheated garage attached garage. Temperature and humidity are the keys. Cool - 45 to 55 degrees with a humidity of 75 percent would be perfect. If you can come close, go for it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
